Chords (examples based on C)
C maj. 7 = Root, 3rd, 5th and 7th: all in the key of the root (C E G B)
C7 = Root, 3rd, 5th and lowered 7th: all but the 7th are in the key of the root. Lower the 7th by a half step. (C E G Bb)
C9 = C7 plus 9, which is the same as 2 (C E G Bb D)
Cmin.7 = Root, lowered 3rd, 5th, lowered 7th: think in the key of the root and lower the 3rd and 7th (C Eb G Bb)
C = Root, 3rd, 5th: all in the key of the root (C E G)
C min. = Root, lowered 3rd, 5th: (C Eb G)
C * = diminished triad or Root, lowered 3rd, lowered 5th: (C Eb Gb)
Guidetones = 3rd and 7th of a chord
Guidetone Lines = creating smooth motion from one guidetone to the next with as little jumping as possible.
Use these as the structure for your solos. Use the key scale (major or blues) to create the other notes in a solo.
